Is a Professional Organizer Right for You?

How to tell when it’s time to call in an expert

When my husband and I were new homeowners and learning about everything that went into home maintenance, we quickly came across repairs and issues that were beyond our DIY skills. YouTube has been our guiding light in homeownership, but there were just some things that we couldn’t—or didn’t want to—tackle ourselves. Without handy relatives nearby, we realized that we needed to outsource to keep our home functioning at its best.

Sometimes the decision to outsource can be easy—if something vital is broken, and you don’t know how to fix it, you need to call in an expert. A busted dishwasher is one thing, but what about a messy bedroom or a basement packed with stuff? For many people, it’s a lot more difficult to pull the trigger on hiring someone when it comes to things that you could technically do yourself (or feel you should be able to!) but just haven’t yet.

Usually by the time I am in someone’s home for a complimentary consultation, they have made up their mind that they need help in achieving their home organization goals. But if you are reading this, you might be on the fence about reaching out to an expert. Maybe you have heard of home organizing because of TV shows like “Get Organized With The Home Edit” or “Tidying Up With Marie Kondo” and find the idea appealing, but you aren’t sure if you need a professional.

Who Should Hire an Organizer?

I was recently interviewed by House Digest to help their readers understand when they should consider hiring a professional organizer. In that article, I tackle procrastinators, sentimental people, those with small spaces, and families with lots of children or pets. You can read more here on the House Digest website: “An Expert Explains When You Should Consider Hiring A Professional Organizer.”

Beyond these particular cases, professional organizing will help anyone who feels stressed about the way their home functions. If any of these questions resonate with you, an organizing professional will absolutely benefit you and your home:

  • Do you ever you look at the mess in your home and feel upset, frustrated, or even angry or sad?

  • Do you know what needs to be done, but you just haven’t had the time or the energy to tackle your organizing project?

  • Do you feel paralyzed or unsure where to start with decluttering?

  • Is the idea of getting organized just too overwhelming or stressful, so you just close the door, ignore it, and figure you’ll deal with it another time?

It doesn’t matter if the source of your stress is a single closet or the entire house—a professional organizer can tackle jobs big or small, and with zero judgment.

Taking the Next Step

When you decide the time is right to hire a professional, I always recommend that potential clients speak to a few local organizers to get the best fit. Inviting someone into your home is a very personal thing, and you will want to feel a sense of rapport and trust with your professional organizer. Specifics like budget, timing and scheduling, and general approach are all important factors to consider, too.

The best way to determine fit is to reach out to me! Answer a few simple questions on my Contact form, and the process gets underway immediately. We will start with a short phone call to get to know each other and to get a little more information, followed by a complimentary in-home consultation. After talking to you about your goals and explaining the process, I’ll follow up with you a quote and we can get started.

Be stressed no more! Getting organized is life-changing, and I’d love to make it happen for you.
